As of 1 January 2026, retailers must be ready to accept both EUR and BGN as payment currencies and return change in EUR in case of cash payments.
On 4 June 2025, the European Commission and the European Central Bank adopted positive convergence reports on Bulgaria, considering that the criteria for adopting the euro have been fulfilled. Bulgaria is expected to officially adopt the euro from 1 January 2026. A special procedure follows, including consultations with the European Parliament and discussions within the European Council. After the consultations, it is expected that in early July 2025 the Council will adopt a decision on the introduction of the euro as a single currency in Bulgaria.
The dual pricing obligations will apply a few months before 1 January 2026. All retailers should be prepared to comply with the obligations for dual pricing of products and services starting at the beginning of August 2025.
